The Mathematics of RV Off-Grid Autonomy
Boondocking autonomy is not an arbitrary number. It is an engineering balance between three variables: Usable Battery Reserve (Wh), Daily Harvesting (Wh), and Daily Consumption (Wh).
1. Usable Battery Reserve vs Nameplate Ah
Never size boondocking trips around your battery's total nameplate rating. A 100Ah lead-acid battery only provides 50Ah (600 Wh) of usable power before severe plate damage occurs. A 100Ah LiFePO4 lithium battery safely yields 85Ah to 90Ah (1,100 Wh).
2. The Storm Reserve Rule (Days of Autonomy)
Professional off-grid engineers recommend sizing your battery bank to hold at least 1.5 to 2.0 days of total daily consumption without a single ray of sunlight. This buffer ensures you don't have to start a noisy generator in heavy rain or sub-freezing night weather.
